Brazil is a very good study destination for international students because of the good quality of education available in the country. It is easy to study in Brazil as an international student as far as you have the necessary admission requirements and have completed all the process.

How to apply to Brazilian universities as an international student.

Admission process to study in Brazil is  managed by the Ministry of Education (MEC) of Brazil.

A national university application system known as SISU (Sistema de Seleção Unificada) is used by public higher education institutions in order to offer vacancies for candidates who have taken the ENEM( An exams taken by everybody who wants to get admitted to study in Brazil?). To be eligible to write the exams you have to register online on the exams website, upload all the required documents and data and then select the public university in Brazil that you want to enroll in. It should be known that different public universities in Brazil have different requirements and exams score for admission. There is always an option to change the university of choice but this can only be done during the registration period, when the registration period is over,it will be impossible to change the institution of choice.

There are many universities in Brazil that have not  joined SISU ,these universities includes UNIFESP, UFRJ, UFMG and Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). It should be know thtat you can get admitted into these universities using the normal ENEM exams,to get admitted to these universities, you have to write their own admission  exams.

Although public university education in Brazil is free, due to low standard of living of Brazilians, the Brazilian government have made possible that students who perform very well in the admission exams to public universities will be given extra points that can be added to the students academic data when the student starts school. This can be used to benefit from different types of financial aids and schemes provided by the government.

As an  international undergraduate students applying to study in Brazil , you must be able to prove your proficiency in Portuguese. This is a must because all schools in Brazil use only Portuguese as the main language used in communication. So to be able to study in Brazil and take all the admissions examinations, you must know Portuguese very well .

The application process for studying in Brazil is time consuming and requires applicants to start preparing well in advance of their anticipated start date. It is very important to begin the admission process early because in many cases application deadlines are far in advance of the start of the semester (sometimes as many as ten months). You also need to allow time for scheduling any standardized tests needed for admission and then having the results of these tests sent to schools. There is no uniform world-wide application system. Each college or university establishes its own unique policies.

The 6 basic steps for applying abroad are:

Identifying country, universities and the course of your interest

Request universities for Application forms

Taking various required tests

Arranging and preparing Essays and recommendation letters

Completing and Sending Application forms along with required documents

Reporting various test scores to the universities

Selecting Universities:

Selecting universities is a very time consuming and important process not only from the admission point of view but also because applying to universities is very expensive. Hence it has to be restricted to around 6 or 8 universities which are best matched for your requirements.

The best university for you may not be the famous ones, but those that offer you your field of study as well as meet the other criteria important to you.

Requesting Application Forms:

There are two ways to get application forms:

1. Requesting Application Forms via email : You can request application forms from the universities website. Most universities have a form on their website which can be completed online to request application material.

2. Downloading from the university website : Many universities have a downloadable and ready to print versions of their application forms on the net. These can be used for applying just as regular forms.

Application Requirements:

Once you start receiving application forms and material, go through the material in detail and check the application deadline, minimum scores required in the standardized tests, recommendation letters needed and other such information.

Tabulate all these requirements and compare them with your objectives and group the universities under three categories :

1. Schools that seem to match your requirements

2. Schools that are not suited to your needs

3. Schools that do not completely fit in any of the above two categories

Recommendation letters:

Many universities have their own format and questions that have to be answered by the person who is giving the letter of recommendation on your behalf. Letters, which do not give enough information, can jeopardize a candidate’s chances of selection.

School records/Academic transcript:

The transcripts of your academic record are absolutely essential to the evaluation of your academic abilities. Your official transcript or academic record is the objective part of your application. Academic records greatly vary from one education system to the other. Systems of evaluation or grading and the formats used to present this information also differ widely.

Undergraduate : Students who are applying for a Bachelor program or any other undergraduate course would be required to submit a secondary school report and transcripts (report cards) of the final exams. The report form should be filled out by a school official like the principal, counselor or headmaster. This form should introduce you in the context of your whole school experience in relationship to the other students in your class. Admission committees will be interested in learning how you have performed in your own educational system. The school report should talk about your accomplishments and provide a statement of your chances for success in university-level studies.

Graduate : Students applying for Graduate courses (MBA, MS etc) are required to submit an official transcript from each college or university that they have attended after secondary school with complete details of the subjects, credits involved and other details like correspondence courses, diplomas etc. Most universities ask for the transcript to be sealed in an envelope and signed and attested across the seal by the registrar. This procedure is to be done for each and every college that you have attended. Some universities may ask for more than one transcripts but most require only one.

In order to assist with the global expansion, many companies are eyeing students with international experience because they will be able to transition into new countries more easily.

Studying internationally gives students insight into different cultures and also allows for networking opportunities. Building relationships with international companies opens the doors to new opportunities after graduation and prepares students for the global landscape companies are now working in.

2. Apply for international scholarships

There are a lot of international scholarships and grants available for students who choose to study abroad. For students who choose to pursue a long term graduate program in another country, the costs of your degree can be decreased significantly by grants.

Unlike domestic grants, there is much less competition for international grants because there aren’t as many students that opt for a long-term study abroad program. Generally students will attend for a semester or two, and then return home.

Depending on the country you’re studying in, the cost of living can also be significantly less. For instance, students traveling from the US to Israel will be pleasantly surprised by how much it costs to live there.

3. Learn about a different culture

Similar to the globalization benefits, many students choose to study internationally to learn about a different culture. Most study abroad programs give students the ability to explore the area and learn about the history and culture.

4. Grow and develop personally

Putting yourself in an unfamiliar environment allows you to really learn about yourself and what you’re capable of. For many, the thought of going to a university in another state or city is overwhelming. Going to a country where people don’t even speak the same language and the customs are completely different than what you’re used to requires a lot of commitment and openness.

Many students become much more independent and establish a higher level of maturity because they are essentially on their own for the first time in their lives. Although there are other students and friends present, students have to be self-confident, have a certain level of tolerance for ambiguity, and accept views that might be contrary to their own.

5. Learn a new language

Multilingual graduates are very intriguing to employers. As you get older, picking up new languages becomes increasingly difficult. If you can learn a new language while in college, it will be a great skill that you can carry with you throughout the rest of your life.

Some of the more popular languages employers seek are Spanish, Korean and Chinese. However, the ability to speak any second language is desirable; you never know when the skill will come in handy. The more fluent you are (speaking and writing) the more attractive you’ll be to employers.

6. Get a global perspective

Without traveling to other countries, it’s impossible to get a full scope of what the emerging trends and opportunities are around the world. Restricting yourself to only looking at the opportunities available in your home country gives you a narrow perspective.

Whether you’re a budding entrepreneur or you plan on seeking employment within a company, the wider your perspective, the more you will be able to accomplish. Cultural immersion will show you opportunities present in other countries that you otherwise would have never known about.

In summary Brazil is a very good study destination for international students, all you need is the right information and preparation to get started.
